1. Who we are
Greet is run by GreetWorld Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17498014). Our registered office is 167-169 Great Portland Street, London, England, W1W 5PF. We are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) under registration number ZC266447.
For this policy, GreetWorld Ltd is the “data controller”, which means we decide how and why your personal data is used. If you have any questions, email us at privacy@greetyourworld.com.
2. What information we collect
When you create an account or log in
- Your email address, which we use to send you your login code.
- If you choose to continue with Google, the name and email address Google shares with us.
- Your name and any profile details you choose to add, such as a photo, bio, home country or the places you’ve travelled.
When you use the community
- Posts, comments, replies, photos, group memberships, reactions and messages you send.
When you join our waitlist or subscribe to our newsletter
- Your email address, the date you signed up and whether you confirmed it. We send a confirmation email first, and we only email you once you click the link in it.
- Our emails may record whether you open them or click a link, so we can see what is useful.
When you buy from our shop
- Your name, email address, delivery and billing address, phone number (if you give one) and order details.
- Payments are handled by Stripe and PayPal. We never see or store your full card details.
When you contact us
- Your name, email address and the content of your message, whether you use our contact form or email us.
When you browse our website
- Technical information such as your IP address, browser, device, the pages you visit and how long you stay. We collect this through cookies and similar technologies. See our Cookie Policy.
3. How we use your information, and why
The law says we must have a valid reason (a “lawful basis”) for using your personal data. Ours are:
- To provide what you’ve asked for (contract): running your account, logging you in, letting you use the community and delivering shop orders.
- Our legitimate interests: keeping Greet secure, preventing spam and abuse, moderating the community, understanding how the site is used and improving it. We only rely on this where it doesn’t override your rights.
- Your consent: keeping you on our waitlist, sending you our newsletter and marketing emails, and using cookies that aren’t strictly necessary. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligations: keeping financial records and responding to lawful requests from authorities.
4. Who we share your information with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with trusted companies that help us run Greet, and only what they need:
- WP Engine: our website hosting.
- Google: our business email (Google Workspace), which also delivers the emails we send you, Google sign-in and, if you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics.
- Stripe and PayPal: payment processing for shop orders.
- MailPoet: the tool we use to manage our waitlist and newsletter. It runs on our own website, so your sign-up details are stored with our hosting provider, and the emails are sent through Google.
- GTranslate: the tool that translates our pages when you pick a language with the globe icon. It uses Google Translate, so the text of the page you are viewing is sent to them to be translated.
- Delivery companies such as Royal Mail: delivering your shop orders.
- Professional advisers, such as accountants, and authorities where the law requires it.
Some articles contain affiliate links to partners such as booking and tour companies. If you click one, you leave Greet and that partner collects its own data under its own privacy policy. We only see that a click or purchase happened, not your personal details.
5. What other people can see
Anything you post in the community, and the profile details you choose to make public, can be seen by other members and, depending on the group, possibly by anyone. Please don’t post information you’d want to keep private, such as your home address or travel dates.
6. Sending your data outside the UK
Some of the companies above, such as Google and Stripe, may process data outside the UK. When they do, we make sure the transfer is protected by an approved safeguard, such as a UK adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses, as the law requires.
7. How long we keep your information
- Account and community content: until you delete your account, or until we close an inactive one. Posts may be kept in anonymised form in some cases.
- Waitlist and newsletter: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your details. If you never confirm your email, we won’t email you again and we delete it after a reasonable time.
- Shop orders and invoices: 6 years, as UK tax law requires.
- Messages to us: up to 2 years after we last speak.
8. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of your personal data;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- ask us to delete your data;
- ask us to restrict how we use it;
- receive your data in a portable format;
- object to us using it, including for marketing;
- withdraw your consent at any time.
To use any of these rights, email privacy@greetyourworld.com. We’ll reply within one month. You can unsubscribe from marketing at any time using the link in any email we send.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We’d appreciate the chance to fix things first.
9. Keeping your information safe
We use secure hosting, encrypted connections (HTTPS) and one-time login codes for members, so there is no member password to steal or reuse. No system is perfectly secure, but we take sensible steps to protect your data.
10. Children
Greet is not designed for anyone under 16. We don’t knowingly collect data from children. If you think a child has given us their information, please email us and we’ll delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed. If we make a significant change, we’ll tell you by email or on the site.
